Maybe 1 note: I assumed your USB device is OK, but that might not be the case. It would not be strange that it worked for years and then after upgrade, which will be many scattered writes, wear-out effects are there, so when large I/O chunks, the USB flash device cannot handle a high rate. Also most USB connected devices/sticks do not support trim, so a big write will result in forced block erasure ad-hoc first. If on flash that supports trim, free pages can be there, so direct use. But up to you to judge. I use Btrfs for rootfs, that will detect a error like you see with syslog, assuming it is due to wear-out. And go read-only so no further corruption possible.
