I found that the "quirks" thing worked for me.
It could be the cable...but I doubt it...I suppose that it's cheap enough to be worth trying.
Another thing that might be worth a try is using a powered hub to drive the SSB. I've had issues running multiple drives via USB on a 400 that were solved by using a powered hub.
