There are sites out there that provide artwork (form games and other stuff) for free or even just giving credit to the artist in your product (in your case, a game).
Any company out there that sells computer games, programs, sites, etc, will hunt you down and either, make you stop using their material (which is all copyrighted), or sue you into oblivion to recover financial damages, worth multiples times whatever amount of money you may have made from using their artwork in your games, programs, sites, etc.
All you have to do is search for "free computer game sprites" and lots of sources come up.
Same goes for music and sound effects.
