As already mentioned USB FDDs will have trouble with anything other than FAT formatted 1.44MB discs. AFAIK the only interfaces for 5.25" drive are somewhat niche.
I've an old x86 box sitting under my desk with RPiOS for PC&Mac installed just because it has a real FFD controller and real 3.5" FDD. Doesn't get booted often these days but it should read pretty much anything as long as the correct kernel modules for the file system are available.
The one I mentioned in the post you quoted. RPL's release of Debian i386 with their desktop mods.
It's old not ancient. I'll boot it up later and post the hardware spec. Some variant of a quad core pentium I think.
