General discussion • Re: Raspberry Pi OS Identification

The 32-bit Raspberry Pi OS used Raspbian as a base. Raspbian used Debian source code and compiled it specifically for the ARMv6 CPU used by the Pi 1 and Zero, which Debian didn't support.

The 64-bit Raspberry Pi OS uses Debian as a base. All Pis capable of 64-bit mode have CPUs supported by Debian.

Both OS varieties also have some packages that have been created or modified by Raspberry Pi Ltd. Those come from the archive.raspberrypi.com repository.
