Now that I own a Pi 5, I stumbled upon what I assume to be the very same issue.
I run my Pi without a screen lock / password to log in requirement at the moment, so the result is just all windows closing. At first I thought the programs were just crashing when I left them overnight, but turning my Samsung screen for seconds is enough to close 'em all.
I have not tried the "force hot plug signal" workaround yet, but under assumption it's that, I still don't think logging out users when they unplug a monitor and then plug it (or different one) in is what a personal computer is supposed to do.
