General discussion • Android Auto and ODB2

Before I go reinventing the wheel, I thought I'd ask here if somebody has done what I've described below. I've searched around and found some stuff, but nothing exactly as I'm after.

What I want to do is plug a processor, presumably a Pi Zero (maybe with opto-isolators), into the ODB2 port on a car so that it can read all the engine and chassis information. I also want it to plug into the car's USB port and be recognised as an Android Auto device so it can take over the built in infotainment screen and display real time info. I did see somebody claim you can do this just through the ODB2 port without a USB connection but I've never seen that backed up anywhere, nor information on how to do it.

I've found various Pi + Android Auto stuff on Github but it all seems to require a Pi touchscreen which isn't what I want - needs to be just using the built in display.

Anybody done anything like this ?

Thanks in advance.
