Yeah that's what I'm currently doing, booting it from an external device (SD card reader, reading the SD card) it's just that the built in slot doesn't work while the SD card reader doesIt's not clear to me what you are doing.
You say that you can't access the built in SD slot...yet you say that you are tying this on the PI..
Have you booted from an external device rather than the SD card?
Can you boot off the SD card if it's in your external card reader?
