Troubleshooting • Issues connecting to PI 4 desktop from Windows 11

I am having problems for every connecting to a PI 4 bookworm desktop from my Windows 11 PC.
The problems are different for each method.

First, my hardware setup:
  • PI 4B Rev 1.2 running bookworm up to date as of May 8, 2025.
    4 GB of RAM.
    Gigabit ethernet.
  • Windows 11 PC also up to date as of May 8, 2025.
    Gigabit ethernet.
    Running VNC viewer version 7.13.1.
I've been using emacs as my main editor since 1984 and gnu emacs is part of some of the problems.
Any suggestion to use an editor other than gnu emacs is not an option.

Also, I am writing micropython and C code to run on Raspberry Pico, Pico W, and Pico 2.
Most of the time I have a Pico connected to USB on the PI 4, but not always.

Remote connection methods and problems:
  1. Raspberry PI Connect
Works well except many of the standard keyboard short-cuts used by gnu emacs are captured by the web browser.
I don't seen any way to configure the web browser to pass the short-cuts through to the PI 4.
I know I could configure gnu emacs to use different keyboard short-cuts.
But, I've been using those short-cuts for 40 years.
  2. VNC with X11
When running gnu emacs scrolling around in a file the text sometimes becomes corrupted.
The easiest way to reproduce the problem is to use 'ctrl-v' and 'esc-v' to page up and down.
Alternatively repeat 'ctrl-l' which alternates between putting the current text line in the middle, top, or bottom of the window.
If I do the emacs command 'meta-x redraw-display'.
This problem showed up in the last couple of months.
  3. VNC with wayland or labwc
As mentioned, I use emacs as a text editor. I also write micropython code using thonny.
Intermittently the same character gets inserted into the file I'm editting with emacs or thonny.
The characters are inserted at a rate of about 5 per second. Usually I see ')', '0', or ','.
Once it starts inserting these characters it won't stop until I log out and log in again.
This problem also showed up in the last couple of months.
I tried doing a fresh install and the VNC problems are still there.
If I connect my monitor, keyboard, and mouse directly to the PI 4B I don't see the VNC problems.
