The 4GB or 8GB memory configuration should provide sufficient memory to avoid needing swap space. However, the default swap space allocation on RPios is only 100MB so it is possible that the desktop RPios is needing swap space and the default allocation is not sufficient. This will cause freezing and very strange performance issues.
Increase the swap space allocation to 2GB by editing the file /etc/dphys-swapfile and changing the line CONF_SWAPSIZE=100 to CONF_SWAPSIZE=2048.
