Simple circuit, but complex code. Personally, I'd have used an MCP3001, a single-channel 10-bit ADC. It's small, inexpensive and interfaces via SPI. It's forgiving enough that you can toggle pins manually and get the value read out bit by bit. Counting pulses from an RC oscillator might've been okay for the Apple II's joystick ports, but we have affordable ADCs now.

Oh, and Bosse_B: someone was looking for you in the raspberry Pi as printer server thread. They have the same kind of printer as you had problems with, but are using a different Raspberry Pi.
