Beginners • Re: Best NAS Software

Happy to put the effort in to build something but once built, I like ease of use.
That's what I did with my "NAS". I set it up around 20 years ago with NFS on an old laptop. Later I added Samba for my wife's Windows PC. I moved it over to a Pi 2B when those came out. It's now on a Pi 4B. Other than the hardware and the usual software updates it hasn't really changed in all that time.

Similar story here though not quite as long. Currently using a CM4, PCIe switch, 2 x SATA cards, 5 drives (soon to be 7), and a couple of zero2w. All stuffed into an mATX PC case. Technically the zero2w aren't part of the NAS they're just in there for convenience of mounting and powering.

The shared PCIe bandwidth isn't really a problem as it's still faster than the network.
