Unfortunately, I've tried pretty much every permutation of keyboard/mouse combinations and none workOn the older Pi models, I'd say that there was a power switch problem on the USB, which (IIRC) also affects the Ethernet. It could be because something on the USB is drawing too much current, which triggers a USB power reset.
I'm not sure if the Pi5 is the same. But, in the absence of other ideas, I think it is a hardware failure. Can you check the Pi with a different keyboard and mouse, or at least check the keyboard and mouse on another computer? Failing that, try the keyboard without the mouse (and vice versa). That should determine whether the problem is with the Pi, the keyboard, or the mouse.
Is the Pi in a case, or at least placed on an insulating surface away from screwdrivers, paper-clips, and other stray metal objects?

Pi is in a case, so I'll probably try and replace it
