Connect doesn't explicitly call out to Chromium - instead, it uses xdg-open (https://linux.die.net/man/1/xdg-open)
While Debian alternatives may have set up the x-www alternative, it looks like it hasn't configured the XDG default browser, which you might do like so:
Note that you will need to point it at a .desktop file for the browser you want to use.
