I'd use a rotary encoder for that project. You should be able to completely replace the variable capacitor with the encoder.

The problem with a rotary encoder, which is why I didn't suggest it, is that it doesn't give absolute position.
There are absolute rotary encoders as well as incremental. BCD, Binary, Gray etc. Binary will usually give the highest resolution, for a 4 bit encoder that would be 16 positions. There are higher resolutions but the price goes up a lot.
I know. I didn't recommend one of them either.
