Very happy to report that things are still working correctly this morning! Next step is for me to try getting it running at startup.
That's the fun bit. I suggest you work out what your python code depends on (probably at least the network being up) then use an apropriately configured systemd service not rc.local or an @reboot cron job as those run before the network is up.
