kerry_s I don't see that.
Raspberry (on the menu bar)/Preferences/Appearence Settings/ only shows me Font, Highlight Colour, Highlight Text Colour, Mouse Cursor. There is no Light or Dark option there. Try as I might I can't get the Menu Bar set as anything other than light grey text on a black background as if something is over riding my choices.

This is on a newer Pi 4 b running bookworm.
If I'm not looking in the right place could you be a little more specific describing where you're seeing your light and dark settings?
BTW, nothing I've done to those preferences seems to affect calc.
