Here is the wiring diagram I said I'd do. Hopefully it matches what you were expecting, and what you actually made.

As you can see, now that we have the schematic for the board we can basically ignore it. The important piece is JP1. Assuming that the schematic is correct, then we know which pins on JP1 are used for the various functions of the board, therefore we only care about the connections from the Pico to JP1. Then, when the physical connections are made, we match the pin declarations in the code. Then, handle the pins in software just the right way and magic happens. Not sure why magic is not happening yet, but we'll get to the bottom of it.
