what you want to do is always keep a copy of a raspberry os desktop on a sd.
it boots sd first, so you can always use that to setup the nvme and should something happen, it will if your planing to use anything other then the recommended os, you'll have a easy means to recover.

with the sd you can install new images or copy usb to nvme using the copier, it also gives you a means to backup installs, like coping the nvme to usb.

i been watching the latest ubuntu and have found it very crashy.

i tend to run a custom raspberry os lite + desktop install, but i do like to see what other os's are doing. Image may be NSFW.
