Which OS and major release of it are you running?
Is the ethernet connection the only way the Pi and PC can see each other? If they're also on the same WiFi network that can cause problems especially whle using zeroconf* (hostname.local).
*: because zeroconf relies on netwoek broadcasts that go out on all interfaces.
