Getting a stepper motor up to speed is very different from a standard DC motor.
With a standard motor you just need to give it its maximum voltage and it will wind the speed up. If you just start sending high speed step pulses to a stationary stepper motor it will probably just sit there making a nasty noise. You need to accelerate it up a controlled speed profile, which will depend on the load. I have got small NEMA 17 motors with minimal load up to a few thousand rpm, but it takes careful control. Search on-line for stepper motor acceleration.
